The Trump movement's most telling and characteristic moments – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of a few weeks, the nation's leader started showing everyone his designs for a gilded ballroom two times larger than the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the eastern section to erect it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the present calculation of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and rising, and presently research predicted his energy policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – genuinely, no former commander would have conceived – solo demolishing significant portions of the executive mansion to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.
We went from 'the humble will receive the world' toward 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'
As disorienting as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the traditional concept about democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group within America who might not perceive it completely novel. That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of hate who blesses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that exist valuable insights of substantial value within Christian narrative.

Christ's response to violence is to offer the additional cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a means to teach the aggressor; his crime policy states that when an individual takes your coat you should give the person your additional clothing too.
The apparent and straightforward reality that the Savior in biblical accounts advocates for a type of extreme compassion concentrated on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism requiring to be contained. In the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Best Among Us
Hence I have become heartened to see the steadfast resistance regarding Trump emerge in this past year. It has been great solace to participate in developing the initiative that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged citizens to turn out in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners during all protests and appeals to the highest qualities within national heritage.

The nation is most protected, in other words, by relationship to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to that which renders it special and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Jesus.
