It has been 30 anniversary after the original Toy Story film was released, launching the animation giant as a leading film company and bringing audiences to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

In 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the plot but leaving viewers wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang

In the teaser shows Bonnie — who received Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a brand new toy, one that alarms the familiar toy group. Bonnie gets her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a new adventure with Bo Peep (the actress), journeying with a carnival and helping giveaway items find good homes.

Surely, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him appear in Bonnie's room without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have come back with him. And what about Duke Caboom (the star)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

At the very least, some elements are continuing from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), entrusting her in charge of the toy domain. The clip displays the insignia pinned to her outfit.

Hopefully she is still the driving force among the toys.

Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
