Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress Following Wave of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of outer space.

The group of women also featured leaders in multiple disciplines.
